5 Section Taijiquan Program

urban1.png

The 5 Section Taijiquan Program has been designed to be flexible and fun, following the premise that students who enjoy the learning process will stick around to take on more difficult challenges.

Forms and practices from The 5 Section Taijiquan Program have been adopted by taijiquan schools around the world.

This modular program was designed to meet the needs of contemporary recreational taijiquan groups and to prepare committed students for traditional full-curriculum taijiquan training.

Practitioners trained with 5 Section Taijiquan forms, connection work and principles training are well prepared for the more rigorous intensity of traditional taijiquan programs which are focused more intensely on martial-arts training and self-cultivation. Mastering the basics of taijiquan via the Wuduan Taijiquan Program can accelerate overall taijiquan development by many years when used as preparation for traditional Yang-style Taijiquan and other internal martial arts.

The ‘overview diagram’ below provides an at-a-glance view of the program. The diagram depicts the program’s three-layered structure and sketches out the connection between the various forms and practices. By illustrating the relationships of the component parts, the graphic can be used as an aid in devising optimal paths through the curriculum for individuals and groups in different circumstances.

The 5 Section Taijiquan Program consists of material organized in three layers:

          1. Outer Layer (Form)

          2. Inner Layer (Connection)

          3. Deep Layer (Core Principles)

Outer, Inner & Deep Layers

Following is a list of the full curriculum of the Wuduan Taijiquan Program organized in its three layers.

1. Outer Layer (Form)

The ‘5 Section’ forms, each derived from the 5 Section Yang-style Solo Barehand Form, comprise the outer layer. They are:

• 5 Section Taijiquan Solo Barehand Form—Yang-style (Wuduan Yang-shi Taijiquan; 20 forms, beginner)

• 5 Section Taijiquan Partner Barehand Form (Wuduan Taijiquan Sanshou; 50 forms, intermediate)

• 5 Section Taijiquan Solo Sword Form (Wuduan Taijijian; 27 forms, beginner/intermediate)

• 5 Section Taijiquan Partner Sword Form (Wuduan Taiji Duilianjian; 64 forms, intermediate/advanced)

• 5 Section Taijiquan Solo Barehand Form—Chen-style (Wuduan Chen-shi Taijiquan; 23 forms, intermediate)

2. Inner Layer (Connection)

The middle layer deals with connected interaction and is explored by two practices:

5 Section Taijiquan ‘Sensing-hands’ (Jue-shou). Multi-functional partner work that supports solo and partner barehand form studies.

5 Section Taijiquan ‘Sensing-sword’ (Jue-jian). Multi-functional partner work that supports solo and partner sword form studies.

3. Deep Layer (Core-principles)

The third layer trains core-principles underlaying every aspect of 5 Section Taijiquan. These are explored through the ‘5 Words Brocade’ (Wuci Tairan Wuduanjin), a five-part (neigong) practice which includes:

• 5 Words of Self-composure (Wuci Tairan)

• 5 Section Taijiquan Core-principles (Wuduan Hexin Dinglu)
